An objective art survey is essential to optimizing the preservation of an object or collection:
A survey provides an overview of the conditions under which a monument or collection is kept, serves as a benchmark of its condition and allows for estimation of resource requirements;
It measures the objects' and monuments' condition themselves and identifies causes or deterioration;
It provides recommendations and priorities for conservation actions, both immediate and future, facilitating the development of long-range plans for the care and preservation of the collection;
A professional survey can serve in determining insurance coverage and be used as a fund-raising tool for institutional development and future conservation projects.
General Evaluation Surveys are undertaken to assess the condition of a monument or collection and the associated facilities and to provide potential recommendations to ensure preservation. CFAC reviews the collection, conditions and policies under which the collection is maintained. With the survey, CFAC produces a written and photographic report that includes an overview of the preservation environment and lists conservation issues and priorities. A General Evaluation Survey provides a summary of the preservation conditions under which the artwork and artifacts are kept and their impact on the collection at large.
Object Surveys focus on individual objects within a collection or portion of a collection. CFAC examines each specimen in detail and determines its condition and conservation requirements. Condition reports are prepared for each object and conservation recommendations are presented as needed. If an entire collection or portion of a collection is surveyed, CFAC provides an ordered priority list for objects requiring conservation intervention within the corpus. An Object Survey is an essential tool in collection management, assessing suitability for exhibition and loan, creating a preservation strategy and determining priority care and appropriate insurance coverage.
